What countries perform best at World Championships?

The graph shows the percentage wins per country rather than wins as some races are newer than others.

Men's Elite Road Race - 92 editions.

Women's Elite Road Race - 65 editions.

Men's Elite Time Trial - 32 editions.

Women's Elite Time Trial - 32 editions.

Using the number of times a rider from any of the four countries won would make the graph a more inaccurate representation of the data as it wouldn't take into account the ratio of wins to possible participations. The graph also fails to show the percentage of other winning countries but this is a representation of the top 4 across the disciplines.

France and The Netherlands remain the most successful across the four races with multiple wins in each. This partially goes against the stereotype that Belgium and The Netherlands are the best as Belgium are yet to have a winning rider in the Women's Time Trial.

Italy may be a slight surprise but as a country they are the second most represented country across the women's peloton with 36 riders and the third most represented in the men's peloton with 57. Filippo Ganna and Jonothan Milan are perhaps currently the most recognised with Ganna winning the World Championship TT in 2020 and 2021 and being one of few TT specialists. Milan is among the best sprinters with 2 points jersey wins and 8 stage wins at the Giro despite only being 24. In the Women's pro peloton you have Elisa Longo Borghini who is third in the individual UCI world ranking on 4509.8 points and 49 pro wins in her career. Elisa Balsamo is currently 6th in the same ranking and won the Women's World Championship Road Race in 2021.
